Each spring plans for the next school year begin to take shape. Principals are diligently preparing and looking forward to the transition our District will be making in 2016-2017. We are excited about the wonderful opportunities it brings to our students and community. In addition to many other tasks, classroom assignments for students are one of the important decisions a principal makes to prepare for the upcoming school year.
To start the student placement process, a principal gathers information from a number of people to make the most effective placement for our students in Crosby ISD. Starting next school year, the CISD Student Learning Profile will be the tool used to help in the decision of classroom placement at all elementary campuses in grades Prekindergarten-5th. The District is asking for parent participation in this process. The CISD Student Learning Profile will be distributed to all parents of these children to gather input to be used in the placement process. The profile will collect information about their child’s academic strengths and weaknesses, preference of ideal teaching style and educational environment, and anything else they feel is valuable information to consider when placing their child with a teacher for next school year. Philosophically, we as a district are moving away from traditional teacher requests. The intent for collecting the CISD Student Learning Profile information will be to facilitate the transition from allowing teacher requests to not allowing teacher requests.
We, as a district, value our parents greatly and want your input about your child’s educational needs.
Please take the time to fill out the CISD Student Learning Profile and return the form to your child’s school by May 27, 2016. You may print and fill out the Student Learning Profile by clicking the link below. Thank you for your participation in helping with this process to ensure the best educational placement for your child.
Questions and Answers Regarding Student Classroom Placement
1. What are the goals of student placement?
It is our goal to have all students in an instructional setting that will allow them to learn as much as possible in a safe, secure and supportive environment. Classrooms will be heterogeneous in their makeup.
2. What does heterogeneous mean?
Heterogeneous grouping means each class has a wide variety of talents, abilities, and interests. A well-balanced classroom is in everyone’s best interest. It is also our intent to match teacher strengths to student needs and talents.
3. Who is responsible for placing students in classrooms?
The principal is designated by the Board of Education to make the final decision on student placement. The principal is the one who is able to gather information from all available sources in order to make decisions which are appropriate for all students in the school.
4. May parents help the principal make the appropriate assignment?
Yes, by completing the CISD Student Learning Profile. Forms are available from the school office and on our website which is www.crosbyisd.org. Forms returned by May 27, 2016 will be used in the placement process. (Forms that request a teacher will not be used.) Forms returned after that date will not be included in the placement process. Information provide by parents will be treated as confidential.
5. Do I have to fill out a Student Learning Profile for my child?
A written Student Learning Profile, or lack of a Student Learning Profile, will have no influence on the care and quality of education given to each child.
6. How will my child be placed with a classroom teacher for next school year?
Consideration of many factors, including but not limited to academic and social considerations, total class size, male/female ratio, and heterogeneous grouping are used in the placement decisions. The final decision on all student placements rests with the principal.
7. What criteria are used for placement?
There are many variables which affect the assignment process including but not limited to academic and social considerations. Some of these variables include: input from parents, performance on assessment measures, a child’s work habits, study skills, daily level of performance, gender, total class size and teacher style. The final decision on all student placements rests with the principal.

No, all parents will be treated equally.
